Tinctures, a Quick "How To"
A few folks have asked about tinctures... what are they and how do you go about making them? Well, it's not that hard...
A tincture is made by
soaking crushed/dry plant materials in alcohol and the
resulting fragrant liquid (or tincture) is used much like essential oils.
Tinctures can be used
to anoint yourself or objects, such as ritual tools, amulets, sachets, candles,
etc. (Although there are tinctures on the market for health purposes, I would
recommend that homemade tinctures be used for only magical purposes, do not
ingest them.)
Tinctures are created
using very strong alcohol. Ethyl alcohol is the best alcohol to use, but it
is hard to find and often too expensive to purchase once found.
You can substitute a strong clear alcohol, but for the best tinctures try
to get one that is at
least 120 proof.... 140 proof or higher is even better!
The plant material should
be dry and you will want to crush it well; use a mortar and pestle because
you really want it to be ground fine for
best results. You can use dried herbs, tree barks, flowers and resins. While
you are working with your plant material keep your mind focused on your magical
intention... you are creating a sacred blend for a magical
purpose, work accordingly! Pour the crushed plant material into a small jar
(with a tight fitting lid) and cover with alcohol. (I use small baby food
jars.) You should shake the
jar every day. After about 13 days strain the plant material from the alcohol
(place a coffee filter or several layers of cheesecloth over another clean
jar and pour the liquid through; discard the herb). Smell the liquid. (If
the alcohol scent is too overpowering for you, dab a small amount onto your
wrist... wait for the alcohol to evaporate and then smell it.) If you think
it is not potent enough, add more
